365 paintings. One for every day of grief.

After his brother Colin died at 35, Preston Zeller made one abstract painting every day for a year. Day 1 was painted the week after the funeral. Day 365 holds Colin’s ashes mixed into the paint. Together the 365 canvases form the mosaic at the center of the documentary The Art of Grieving, a 10 by 20 foot image assembled from a year of loss.

The mosaic is arranged by feeling, not by date. The darkest paintings from the first weeks sit at the core, and the later, more colorful days spread toward the edges, so the whole image reads as grief seen from above. Use the mosaic view to zoom into any day, or switch to the timeline to walk the year in order. Every painting is available as a print, and the full mosaic is available for gallery and museum installation.
